Heated Rivalry: please leave a message by Ravenestra [Dec. 22nd, 2025|09:01 pm]

Fandom: Heated Rivalry
Characters/Pairings: Shane Hollander/Ilya Rozanov (background relationship), Jackie Pike, Original Characters, Background & Cameo Characters
Rating: Teen
Length: 2407
Content Notes: no AO3 warnings apply
Creator Links: Ravenestra on AO3
Themes: Hurt/comfort, Canon LGBTQ+ characters, Women being awesome, Female friendship, Unconventional format and style, Humor, Teams

Summary:

Sarah
Does anyone have the number for Shane's girl from Boston? I feel bad that they've been seeing each other for this long and we've never added her here.

Jackie
Oh good point! Let me ask Hayden.

Jackie has added Lily to the conversation

Lily
what
what is this

Or: Ilya Rozanov is, apparently, one of the girls.

Reccer's Notes: This stems from the pseudonyms Ilya and Shane use over the years to text each other (Lily and Jane). The Montreal WAGs (Wives & Girlfriends) grouptext realizes that Shane's "girl", Lily, hasn't been added, partly as Lily is based in Boston not Montreal. So Ilya gets added to the grouptext and (of course) fits right in. The fic's probably more enjoyable and easier to figure out if you know canon, and I also found I picked up more of the humor and details on a second reading. It's an amusing fic, but also about (largely) female support systems, and shows that NHL partners are not unlike military wives. Very well done. (In addition, there's another story WAG Support Network inspired by this one, written in a more usual format, which is also great and adds some extra details.)

Heated Rivalry: when the world sees (we run toward each other) by pucksandpower [Dec. 22nd, 2025|08:04 pm]

Fandom: Heated Rivalry
Characters/Pairings: Shane Hollander/Ilya Rozanov, Yuna Hollander, David Hollander, Hayden Pike, Zane Boodram, Evan Dykstra
Rating: Explicit
Length: 26,873
Content Notes: contains depictions of homophobia and slurs, state-sanctioned and from individuals
Creator Links: pucksandpower on AO3
Themes: hurt/comfort, angst (with a happy ending), established relationship, canon LGBTQ+ characters, character development, au: fork in the road

Summary: One security camera. One leaked video. One choice that changes everything.

Ilya Rozanov loses his country, his team, and his shot at Olympic gold in a single night. But he doesn’t lose Shane, and that makes all the difference.

A story about finding home in a person, not a place. About choosing love over legacy. And about winning the medal you never knew you needed, standing next to the one person who matters most.

Reccer's Notes: Time to emerge from my Heated Rivalry obsession, with... Heated Rivalry recs! This goes au after the book (after season 1 of the show), so I guess it's a little spoilery if you haven't read the book or seen season 1. The plot takes a very different turn at the 2018 Korean Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. It's told from Ilya's point of view after what initially seems an utter disaster following which he has to flee the Russian authorities. Although it starts with trauma, most of the story is about how Ilya's life is rebuilt, with Shane being central to that, as are his teammates, and Shane's parents. It's an engaging story with great characterization and fun banter between Ilya and Shane, Ilya often being his usual in-your-face, snarky self. A heartwarming story with plenty of comfort to offset the initial hurt.

All clean for 2026; a note on Original Works [Dec. 21st, 2025|05:45 pm]

betaplease

[outstretched]
[Tags|]

Hello, this is your mod. I've finished cleaning up the tags for the new year.

I'm starting to notice that some people are using this community in an attempt to find an editor for their full, original novels - works 50,000+ words or more. I worry that [community profile] betaplease is being used to take advantage of beta-readers for commercial work. This is a space for fandom and fandom-adjacent works, and part of the spirit of fandom (on the fic side, anyway) is that we do not make money on our editing or writing.

After some thought, I've decided the rule is, if you are intending to publish your writing with the goal of making money, it does not belong here on [community profile] betaplease.

If you are publishing your work with the intent of making money, you should be paying an editor for a professional pass. This is for three reasons:

  1. If you are trying to make money on your work, asking someone else for free work so that you can profit is unjust and disrespectful.

  2. Frankly speaking, it is extremely unlikely that you are going to find any editors who are willing to edit a piece of that length for free. Even 10k can be exhausting, especially if you are expecting a professional level editing job.

  3. If you are publishing in a commercial capacity, then your work should get a more professional type of editing pass than what we here in this community can give for free. The amount of effort an editor is going to give a story of over 50,000 words, to a stranger, for characters they don't even know and aren't guaranteed to enjoy reading about, for free, is minimal. You and your readers deserve more than the bare minimum.

I myself have worked as a professional freelance editor for over 15 years. I made this community because I love editing and I love fandom, and I want to support both. Using this community to find free editing for commercial projects feels like you're not respecting editors and our craft. Editing, just like writing or art, is a skill that is honed through years of effort.

With that said, I am not banning original fiction, and any novel-length works posted to [community profile] betaplease before now will be allowed to remain. And of course, if you are looking for an editor for your 50,000+ word original fiction that you plan to publish on AO3 and are never going to try to make money on, by all means, you are welcome here. However, if I notice continued posts in this direction from this point on, I will return this space to being strictly focused on fandom works only. I have also updated the rules to be explicit on this point.

Thank you for reading, and thank you for always supporting this small community. Best wishes to your writing and editing adventures in the new year.

Nearly Roadkill, by Kate Bornstein and Caitlin Sullivan (cyberpunk novel, 1996, 2025) [Dec. 21st, 2025|03:41 pm]

pluralstories

[lb_lee]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ]

The two editions have different subtitles. The 1996 edition is Nearly Roadkill: An Infobahn Erotic Adventure and marketed as cyberpunk, while the 2025 edition is Nearly Roadkill: Queer Love on the Run, and marketed as romance.
Karn: Question: ... ::drumroll:: Online, what *is* your "self"?
Leilia: Oh, christ, there's the question of a lifetime.Karn: Uh huh. Why so for you?
Leilia:
I really become that person online. That's the scary thing. i really believe my fiction. Used to feel bad about it, but obviously there's truth in those fictions.
Blurb: Genderfucking netizens Scratch and Winc splatter across self and identity in this cyberpunk epistolary novel, accidentally starting a global Internet strike, getting accused of high treason, and falling in love.

Why is it worth your time?: Sullivan and Bornstein are queers who used lots of their own chatlogs for this book, which depending on your feeling will be either a good thing or a bad thing. The 1996 edition especially has a lot of pontificating on the nature of self and personality on the Internet, including an exchange where the hero/ines email with a self-declared MPD multi going by "StLouis7." (They decide that they aren't that kind of multiple, but they DO have multiple genders and are exploring interesting expansions of self!) Scratch's persona of Razorfun is ESPECIALLY separate, to the point that Razorfun outright says that "it is my most primitive persona. It is where I go when in danger" and when Winc has to ask Scratch to break out of the Razorfun persona, it's stated to be both difficult and painful. If you're interested in queer cyberspace of the '90s, check it out!

Plural/1+ Tags: abuse not mentioned, creator speaks from experience, otherworld (cyberspace), fictioneers (Lt. Yar and Jadzia Dax from Star Trek), nonhumans (Dax is a Trill, Scratch mentions multiple times wishing ze wa a wolf with a tail), switching, on purpose

Content Warnings: include spoilers; see comments

Accessibility Notes: Okay, so heads up, the 1996 edition and the 2025 editions of this book differ subtly but significantly! The 2025 edition just came out, and it's available in paperback, ebook, and audiobook; it's much easier to find and removed a fair bit, including stuff that really needed removal... but also a lot of the most interesting (to us) ponderings of the nature of self! It also simplified the typefaces and style, but in our opinion to the book's detriment; with all the chats, web diaries, emails, news stories, and announcements flying around, it can be easy to get lost! So the 2025 edition is smoother and simpler.

Meanwhile, the 1996 edition is rough and crunchy in a very '90s way; while the 2025 edition focuses more on gender and romance, the '96 edition pays more attention to self in general. The older edition is expensive and difficult to find these days, though it's been scanned and bootlegged online, and the first chapter is available in clean screenreadable PDF on the Wayback Machine. Take a look, compare and contrast the formatting, and pick the edition you prefer! We are grateful for reading both simultaneously, comparing the drafts side-by-side.

JLI #16-17 introduced the Queen Bee and her alliance with Jack O’Lantern. In that first appearance, she was all poise and grace. Despite her chilling games of mind control, she also exuded a false warmth that snared lovers and allies and disarmed her enemies.

In her second appearance, the warmth is gone. It’s true what they say: holding high political office ages people before their time.

But why won’t certain office-holders DIE of old age already? )
